Languages

I posted this on Facebook but I want to repost on my blog too.

I have heard more foreign languages in this last two weeks then I have heard in a lifetime. Polish, Italian, Russian, Latvian, Urdu, Chinese (Mandarin), Malay, Norwegian, Serbian...I am pretty sure I am missing some but that is probably most of them. And they almost all speak English. English seems to be the common ground for everyone here. That is VERY helpful but American's are so far behind in languages.

Most of these guys speak two or three languages with relative proficiency. One of the Electronics Engineers on board is native to Italy and speaks 3 other languages and can read and write in three of those four. Good grief. Time to hit the Michel Thomas Audio's again.  Many of the management on this project are from Italy.  I think I am going to listen to Italian first.  I would really like to understand what conversations I am being left out of...

Wouldn't it be spiffy to be able to at least understand a few languages by the time I am done with this job.  That would be sweet.
