My Day (May 14th)

I have decided I am going to post some of my workouts. They will not seem terribly hard much of time but with a busy schedule and limited time to actually workout I am just happy I am getting any time in at all.

Today I started my morning with this workout:

  • 50 sword cuts with a Suburito (heavy practice sword)
  • Pinan Shodan x5
  • Line Drills
    • Round house kick x50
    • Front kick x50
    • Side kick x50
    • Lunge punches x30
    • Down blocks x30
    • Knife hand strike x30
  • Tetsubo Yokomenuchi x20 (16# bar)
This evening I will be teaching class for two hours.  The first hour is helping some students work on some self defense techniques for another school.  The second hour I will be working with my students to drill some techniques in preparation for testing.  Don't tell any of them.

Studying Kung Fu in Shanghai

I would like to thank the Longwu Kung Fu school for allowing me to come in a study in their classes during my recent visit to Shanghai. A small fee to come try a class and I was able to participate in a Wushu and a Wing Chun class.

The instructors were very knowledgeable and both seemed to be really good with their students. Having something of a familiarity with the martial arts I can tell when someone is teaching garbage and both of the gentlemen I worked with knew their material VERY well.

I will be honest, I did not explain my martial arts background.  Partially because I am very out of practice but also because I didn't want them treating me like anything but a beginner.  (Which in those two arts I am anyway.)

Anyway it was great fun and if I am ever on a job back in Shanghai I will definitely be going back to the school to continue my study.  I apologize for not getting my instructors names, it didn't occur to me till later than I should do that.  I did manage to get one picture with the Wing Chun instructor but missed the opportunity to get one with the Wushu instructor.

Joint Manipulation Video

Okay, well it is made.  I dislike seeing myself on video but it was for fun and hopefully as we practice we will get better at putting this kind of video together.

Gotta start somewhere I guess.

Anyway, enjoy.

Filming our Video

Well, filming went very well.  I cannot say how great I looked on film but Samurai Girl did most of the throwing and I think things will turn out. Especially for a small time production.

We should have the video edited together and assuming we do not have to do any more filming have it up soon. I admit I am excited.  It was a lot of fun to make.

Joint Destruction Project

One of my senior students (Samurai Girl) came up with a fascinating idea for a video.  Take all the major joints of the body and show a technique for how to destroy each of them. This idea came as the result of a class in Anatomy and Kinesiology.

In the list I have listed all of the joints I am going to address and then the technique I plan on using for the video. It is a very interesting project. When we are done I will be sure to post a link to the video.

Neck - Uchi Kaiten Nage to Men Osae
Shoulder - Yokomenuchi Shiho Nage
Elbow - Mae Kubi Shime Juji Nage
Wrist - Kote Gaeshi, Nikyo, Sankyo

Knee - Uchi Gari to a Hiza Osae

Fingers and Toes work the same for the most part but I can honestly say that the chance of getting toes when they should be inside shoes makes that kind of moot. Also, getting a hold of fingers in a fight is problematic as well. Hands do not sit still often in any sort of conflict. Not to say that it cannot be done just that it is not easy.

The plan is to have this project completed this week and edited together soon after.

Try this again...

Okay, well I have been gone for a while but I am back now and hope to start posting again soon.

My plan is to start with some of the brainstorming material I have been working on for a book I have in the works.

Also, Samurai Girl came up with a really interesting idea for a Kinesiology class she is taking.  I hope to have that project done and posted soon too.  That one will mostly just be for fun but might be interesting to some of you anyway.

I will post again soon.

New Years Resolutions 2013

Okay, so I have decided that I need to really get a bit more focus and set some more specific goals for this year.  In Iain Abernethy's book Mental Strength he talks about the use of the SMART plan for tasks.  SMART stands for:
  • Specific - needs to be a clear and understandable goal.
  • Measurable - clearly defined stages of progress toward completion
  • Achievable - something that can be done reasonably.  Don't plan on making a million dollars unless it is already within reach.  Which leads to the next step.
  • Realistic - needs to be possible.  Flying to, for example, Saturn is not terribly realistic right now.  Something that I can and will actually do.
  • Timely - have a set deadline.  One of my favorite quotes, "the problem with doing nothing is that you never know when you are done."
So given these elements of effective goal setting I have made a plan for this year.  I believe that each thing is within the guidelines that I have above.  So I will track my progress toward my goal on my blog so that I can be accountable to anyone out there that might be reading about my progress.

Please feel free to make comments, positive or negative, as you see fit.

Also, if you have a list of your own and want to share it, post to comments.  I would like to hear what others have planned for this year.

One last thing, any good document of this kind is a living document.  Meaning, that it could change or be updated at any time.  The ultimate goal is to achieve each item on the list but you never know how an item can evolve.

Here is my list:  (lets see how closely it resembles the same list by the end of the year.)
  1. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Studies - January 31st
  2. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Test - February 28th (test delay due to job in Norway)
  3. Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Studies/Test - April 1st (if possible, there may be a time period requirement between tests, I will have to look into that...)
  4. PMP Studies and Test - April 1st
  5. First Draft of my Aikijutsu Book - July 1st
  6. Major Change Planning (details left out for now, but I know what they are...) July 30th
  7. Contracting Process Improvement - December 20th (I have a list of sub-tasks that have dates assigned throughout the year.)

Well, there it is...that may not look like much but it is going to be a LOT of work.

Hope everyone has a great year!  And do post your plans, I would like to know I am not the only crazy person out there making life more challenging for themselves.  Adversity loves company after all.
