  1. Would you have done anything?

As a martial artist, is it our responsibility to help those who cannot (or will not) help themselves in these kinds of situations?

I remember you telling me the story about the guy who stepped in helped the girl who was being roughed up by her boy friend. He kicked the guy hard enough to stop him (well... to really seriously injure him, but it got him to stop which was his first intent) and then walked away to avoid being persecuted. In our society, we very well may be punished for trying to help someone being attacked or for defending ourself, (maybe a lawsuit, maybe jail, maybe both and/or worse) but even so, should we still try to stand up and help if we're able? Do you think there will ever come a time when the people who stand up and do the right thing don't have to hide in the shadows?

  2. I think to some extent that time is now. Yes, I do think we should help those who cannot or will not help themselves. Very altruistic of my I know but ideally I think we should do everything we can.

Now, that said we should be smart about it. That means calling the cops if possible before we step in...Or getting some sort of security involved. Perhaps even getting a crowd worked up over the deal. Anything that might make the person doing harm to reconsider before we step in ourselves.

In Oklahoma we are required by law to do everything humanly possible to escape a violent situation before we resort to self defense of any kind. Whether it be from weapon or hands.
